Imagine if your auntie was an Olympic mountain biker, your grandfather was the first British rider to win a stage at the Tour de France and your sister is a member of the most successful women’s cycling teams in the country.
Would it be nature or nurture that leads you to a professional road racing career? Our partners Bikesoup asked Jake Womersley and his grandfather Brian Robinson.
Jake said:
“I feel there is a bit of pressure because there’s obviously Louise, my auntie, my granddad and now my sister.
“So there’s pressure to keep it going but not too much. If I didn’t enjoy it I wouldn’t do it.”
Brian added:
“I’ve got to say, it’s in the blood. The genes are there and you can always build around that.
“The proof is in Jake and Becky because no-one has pushed them into that, you’ve got to want to do it. It must be built in.”
