Continuing COVID travel restrictions make it impossible for Jones to undertake a European racing programme
Tim Elverson, the team’s Directeur Sportif is disappointed to have to announce that due to the impact of the COVID pandemic, Australian sprinter Brenton Jones has taken the decision to remain in Australia for the foreseeable future. After only having the opportunity to do one race in the team’s colours, Jones is leaving the team so that he can race at national level in Australia and continue his growing coaching portfolio which includes working with Ride Nation and AusCycling.
“It’s such a shame we can’t continue the journey together as in the time we have had, Brenton has been a true professional and has really helped the young guys. He’ll be missed both for his racing and personally, but hopefully by leaving now, he will have the opportunity to get some racing done on home soil. Good luck Brenton” said Elverson.
This is what Brenton has to say about his time with the team and what he’s going to be doing in Australia:
“Yes, it’s really disappointing not to come back and race, Australia is by far the strictest when it comes to travel and it was not secure enough for me to fly to the UK and guarantee that I could get back safely.
From the first moment I landed back in the UK in early 2020, I had tremendous support from all staff and teammates and I knew we could find the results we were chasing. Things started off well with a strong second place at 1.2 Dorpenomloop Rucphen in Holland, but unfortunately COVID took hold and paused our racing programme.
With great support from Tim and the team, I remained in the UK to see out the season but unfortunately, I didn’t get another race in despite the team trying very hard for us. Tim knew what I was capable of and that I had unfinished business with racing, so he offered me a ride in 2021 just as I was about to return to Australia! I accepted right away and was hopeful the COVID situation would improve to allow me to return. I began my season in Australia and the racing and training went well but the plans for me to return to the UK were delayed due to the changing nature of COVID, Australia’s strict border policy and my own personal circumstances.
The decision not to return hasn’t been easy but I decided safety and security in staying in Australia was the best decision for me. I’d like to say a big thank you to Tim for his understanding, support and hospitality during my time in the UK in 2020 and this year. I miss the races and all-round great people from the team, but I know it’s been the right decision at this moment in time for me. I still have many great memories from my time with Canyon and I wish the guys all the best for the remainder of the season!”
Thank you to everyone for your support. You can continue to follow my journey on Instagram @brenton_jones91.”
